WEBSITE DESIGN

Your website should be bringing in work worth sharing easy to find

Most small business websites look fine but do very little. People visit, nothing happens, and you’re not sure why. I build sites on WordPress that are designed from the start to turn visitors into enquiries – not just sit there looking presentable.

Custom Design

Built around your brand - not pulled from a template shelf

Mobile Responsive

Fast and Solid

Optimised loading, clean code, technically reliable

SEO-Ready Structure

Built to be found - proper headings, meta, and page structure from the start

Clear Navigation

Visitors find what they need quickly - no dead ends or confusion

Accessible Compliant

Built so everyone can use it, meeting WCAG AA standards

IS THIS FOR YOU?

If any of this sounds familiar, you're in the right place.

You don’t need a polished brief to get in touch. Most people start from one of these positions.

You're a new business that needs a proper start

You know how important a first impression is, and you want a site that looks like you mean it – not something you cobbled together over a weekend. Starting right matters, and you’d rather do it once properly than rebuild it in two years.

Your site has been there for years and it's showing

Your business has grown but the website hasn’t kept up. It might still technically work, but it doesn’t represent where you are now. You hesitate before sending the link, and that’s a problem. Your site should be something you’re proud of.

You tried building it yourself and got stuck

Months of wrestling with page builders, templates doing things they weren’t designed to do, and a result you’re still not happy with. Or someone built it for you, they’ve since disappeared, and it’s become more trouble than it’s worth.

Somethings changing in your business

A rebrand, a new product line, a pivot in what you actually do. You need the site to properly reflect that change – not just have a few pages swapped out while the rest stays the same and quietly contradicts everything you’re trying to say.

Whatever the situation, the common thread is this: your current setup isn’t working as well as it should, and you’d rather have someone else sort it properly than spend more time trying to fix it yourself.

HOW IT WORKS

What happens from first conversation to launch

No mystery, no surprises. Here’s how a typical project runs.

1

Before anything is built, I spend time understanding your business – who your customers are, what you want people to do when they land on your site, and what you’ve already tried. That shapes everything that comes after.

2

I plan the site structure first – how many pages, how they connect, what each one needs to achieve. Then comes the design: how it looks and feels, using your brand as the foundation and conversion as the goal.

3

Once the design is agreed, I build it. I use WordPress with Elementor – a solid, widely-used platform. Once it’s handed over, you’ll be able to make basic updates yourself without having to call me every time something small changes.

4

Before anything goes live, the site is tested across browsers, screen sizes, and devices. Then it launches – and I make sure the handover is clear, so you actually know how to use what you’ve got.

WHY WORK WITH ME

What you get from a freelancer that you don't get from an agency

Agencies have overheads, processes, and layers between you and the person doing the actual work. What often happens is your project gets handled by someone junior you never met in the meeting, following a process designed to work for twenty different clients at once.

Working directly with me means one person is responsible for your project from start to finish. No handoffs, no generic templates dressed up as custom work, no invoice that includes someone else’s office rent.

You deal with one person throughout

No account managers or project coordinators between you and the person doing the work.

Clear, upfront quotes

You know what you're paying before anything starts. No hidden costs added once the project is underway.

Faster to get moving

No internal briefing process. When you're ready, I'm ready - and things tend to move at a pace that actually suits a small business.

Ongoing support that's actually accessible

Once your site is live, or we're making content, I'm a phone call or email away - not a support ticket in a queue.

"Everybody seems to think they know best how to improve your business through social media. We were lucky to find Tom Thomas-Web & Media because Tom actually does know what he is doing. Tom has a great way with words and has insight as to how our business works. He has also been patient and helpful in explaining what he is doing to somebody who has no knowledge of how social media works."

QUESTIONS

FAQs about website design services

If the answer you need isn’t here, just get in touch.

It depends on what you need. A straightforward 5-page site for a small business typically starts around £500. A more involved project with a portfolio section, blog, and copy review sits closer to £1,000. Larger or e-commerce sites start from around £2,000. Every quote is tailored to the actual project – see the pricing section above for more detail, or just get in touch and I’ll give you a realistic figure based on what you’ve told me.

Most projects take between four and eight weeks from start to launch. The biggest factor in timeline is usually content – getting the text and images together is often where projects slow down. The more prepared you are at the start, the smoother and faster it tends to go. I’ll give you a realistic estimate once we’ve discussed the scope.

It depends on what you need. Most projects work best when the content – your words, your photos, the things only you know about your business – comes from you. You know your business better than anyone. I can help shape it, structure it, and make sure it reads well on the page. If you need help writing it from scratch, that’s something we can discuss as part of the project. For photography, I offer that as a separate service, and it’s worth doing properly if you want the site to look its best.

Yes. I build on WordPress with Elementor, which is designed to be manageable without technical knowledge. Once the project is finished, I’ll walk you through how to make common updates – changing text, swapping images, adding new content. For anything more involved, I offer website maintenance as an ongoing service if you’d rather hand that off.

Yes, a redesign is something I do regularly. Whether that means a full rebuild with a fresh look, or a significant update to what’s already there, I’ll take a look at what you’ve got and advise on the best approach. Sometimes starting clean is the right call. Sometimes it makes more sense to work with the existing structure. Either way, it’s worth having a conversation before assuming anything.

Yes. I understand that a website is a meaningful investment for a small business, and I’m flexible on how payments are structured. Typically projects are split into a deposit at the start and the remainder on completion, but if you’d prefer a different arrangement we can discuss what works for you.

Once the site is live, you’ll have the tools to manage basic updates yourself. For anything more technical – plugin updates, security patches, content changes you’d rather not do yourself – I offer website maintenance as an ongoing service. It’s not compulsory, but a lot of clients find it useful to have someone available who already knows their site inside out.
